ABC Managing Director Mark Scott has announced he will leave the public broadcaster next year.

Scott has helmed the ABC since 2006. He was appointed to his second five-year term in 2010 and in an internal email to staff on Monday afternoon, confirmed he would leave his post at the end of that period.

"This note is just to tell you that if you are interested in being the next Managing Director, keep your eye out for an ad in coming months," he wrote.

"Earlier this year I indicated to the [ABC} Board that I was planning to leave the ABC at the end of my second term which is in the middle of 2016."

ABC staffers took to Twitter to wish their boss well.

And one Triple J employee had a bit of fun with the announcement.
