We Are Explorers: How To Bring Adventure Into Your Life

Video by Emily Verdouw

Two years ago Henry Brydon cycled from London to Sydney with his mate Jamie. It was a trip that took him two years.

He cycled through Europe then down through the Middle East before he made his way to Australia, a country he now calls home.

"For me that cemented this desire to get out into the wilderness as much as possible," Brydon told The Huffington Post Australia.

It was, without a doubt, a massive adventure.

But as Brydon explains, you don't need to tear away from your world for months or years at a time to bring adventure into your life. You can simply make the most of your weekends.

"The reality of life is we don't have a huge amount of time to go on great adventures around the world, or the money," he said.

It was this mindset that led Brydon to create an online adventure community called We Are Explorers.

Sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. I promise you, something great will come of it. #weareexplorers

After arriving in Sydney, Brydon struggled to find accessible information about micro-adventures, so he decided to bring those resources together himself.

15 months later, he has a website that aims to inspire "weekend warriors" around Sydney and Melbourne with new ideas of places to explore.

Once a month, he even organises a 'Secret Adventure Weekend', as for many the idea of adventure is far less daunting than the reality. He aims to get this online community offline and show them it's possible to do.

He organises everything and does it for free.

"The whole purpose is to get people out exploring, and I think the danger is when you're starting just another website it's another way for people to get their information online, but not do what we're actually preaching, which is getting outside and adventuring," he told HuffPost Australia.

"Sydney is probably the best city in the world to be a micro-adventurer. There's so much to explore, to the North, to the South, to the West, and to the East if you're brave enough to take to the seas.

"Hopefully this is a way for people to meet other people, get the information they need and get out there."

The joy exploring brings is clear on Brydon's face.

"I don't have a huge amount of stressors in my life, but I find whatever is on my mind tends to leave when I'm out in the wilderness. It's so beautiful out here, I get completely carried away with whats around me.

"It's just a brilliant opportunity to reboot and throw a few heel clicks as you're strutting down the trail enroute to the campsite."
