On the first day of Christmas, don't be surprised if your true love heads down to the mall to buy a big, plastic palm tree.

Photos of a Christmas palm tree from retailer Big W have been popping up on Twitter, Reddit and Instagram, with mixed reviews.

On Reddit, user Ign1fy made the good point that cats and children couldn't mess with the decorations when they're up so high, while user Bishslap said: "Sold out in Port Macquarie Big W. Town is full of palms so the locals think it's a cute local thing".

Not everyone is scrambling to get their hands on the emerging trend, with people describing it as a "a garish, spiky plastic piece of crap" and calling for something a little more Aussie, like a Christmas gum tree.

For those intending on decorating their own live palm tree, this meme acts as a cautionary tale to be careful of the shape of its, er, trunk.
