A mother has been arrested after a 16-year-old was found chained to a bed in Blacktown, in Sydney's west, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrived at a home on Mort Street around midday after concerns were raised by a charity worker who allegedly saw the boy restrained inside the house.

Ambulance, Fire Rescue and police staff helped to free the boy, who was later taken to Westmead Hospital.

Police say the boy was found chained to a bed. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting the boy is believed to be autistic, and that neighbours said he was regularly seen running naked in the street.

Not long after emergency services attended the home, the boy's 38-year-old mother also arrived on the scene. Police arrested the woman and took her to Blacktown Police Station where she is assisting with inquiries.

"Police continue to investigate the incident and will communicate with other relevant agencies," a NSW Police media statement said.
