Out of sight really is out of mind when it comes to old relationships -- at least according to Facebook.

The social media platform recently launched the "take a break" feature, which essentially allows you to have a social media detox from your ex.

The announcement came via Facebook Product Manager Kelly Winters, who stated the company had received questions from newly-single users "about the options available to them on Facebook" after a relationship ends.

"We are testing tools to help people manage how they interact with their former partners on Facebook after a relationship has ended," Winters wrote.

"When people change their relationship status to indicate they are no longer in a relationship, they will be prompted to try these tools."

The new feature will give users the option to see less of their former partner's social media interaction without having to unfriend or block them (handy if the romance rekindles?).

There is also the option to edit who can see past posts and photographs, or simply untag yourself in all those old couple shots.

Finally, you can remove your presence from their feed by limiting the posts, photos and updates a former partner will be able to see.

The tool has so far been made available in the U.S. only.

It is not clear when it will be rolled out in Australia.
