A hostage situation in the northern French town of Roubaix has ended, with the hostages now safe.

Several armed men took hostages in Roubaix, near the Belgium border in what local media were reporting as a botched robbery.

Roubaix's mayor's office dismissed a link with the ongoing manhunt for the Paris terror suspects, confirming the incident was probably an armed robbery gone wrong.

The mayor's office said the suspects "carried out a robbery", according to AFP.
