A flock of galahs fly in formation over a lone tree in Australia's Strezlecki Desert.

A wraparound spider lurks in the emerald twilight and fishermen wade into a sunset wash of colours.

These are some of the scenes from the Ecological Society of Australia annual photography competition.

Judge Dr Liz Tasker said the photos each told a story of conservation.

"I think that when people see an image, they have an emotional connection," Tasker said.

"They don't need to know any information or the backstory, it's an immediate connection.

Australia’s Best Ecology Photos

The photographers were awarded on Wednesday night at the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of Australia.
