There are no shopping mall appearances or screaming fans for Australia's best minds, but they are getting a taste of the rockstar treatment today thanks to the launch of the top 100 Knowledge Leaders.

The Office of the Chief Scientist and information consultants Knowledge Society have joined forces to celebrate Australia's leaders in science, tech, startups, big data, venture capitalists and more.

CSIRO data-driven future lab Data61 chief executive Adrian Turner told The Huffington Post Australia the 100 leaders were ready to change the future and deserved to be household names.

"I think it's vitally important these people are celebrated because what we're talking about is cultural change," Turner said.

"We need to invest in the crazy ones. The entrepreneurs who are willing to go out on a limb for something they believe in and when they do succeed, we need to hold them up as heroes."

The 100 leaders will meet at a summit next March and Knowledge Society chief executive Elena Douglas said these connections would be invaluable.

"One of the biggest problems facing progress in Australian innovation is each sector operating in isolation," Douglas said in a statement.

"You can't have a meaningful innovation agenda unless all of the spheres of activity are working together -- education at all stages, researchers, venture capitalists, policy-makers, commercialisers, universities."

Douglas said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's Ideas Boom launch this week was the kick start these leaders needed to thrive.

"These top 100 knowledge leaders will turn the words of innovation we're hearing and seeing into real action," Douglas said.

"As no statement can be made into reality without the likes of these ambitious visionaries making it happen -- and they should be celebrated for the significant role they are going to continue to play."
