Surprising Ways To Make Instant Coffee Taste Relatively Decent

Coffee aficionados, stop reading here. You can take your coffee snobbery elsewhere because this story if for instant coffee lovers who unashamedly adore the brown stuff in all its granular glory.

Plus, if you've read a women's lifestyle magazine in the last decade or so you'll have most likely come across a page, graph or pie chart that illustrates how much money you can save if you skip your daily cafe-bought coffee.

That said, the humble instant caffeine hit can get a little boring after a while. So with that in mind, us instant lovers at The Huffington Post Australia suggest you try these pimp-my-pot instant coffee upgrades.

The Cream Upgrade

Many people don't like instant coffee for its watery consistency, but a dash of thickened cream in place of milk fixes that. It sounds simple enough but it makes such a surprising difference. The end result is a thicker, creamier coffee that actually almost tastes store bought. Almost.

The Milo Mocha

If you like sugar in your coffee, switch it out for Milo instead. Mix equal parts Milo and instant coffee and add the boiling water, stirring until the Milo is dissolved. Add milk (or cream as above if you're feeling wild). You've now got yourself a DIY mocha, and you've skipped the sugar sachet.

Want to go one better? Make a Nutella Surprise. Follow the same steps as above but with a delicious blob of Nutella instead of the Milo. It'll take a little longer to melt, but is seriously yummy -- and at the end you're left with a runny, melted layer of Nutella at the bottom of your cup, perfect for scooping up with a teaspoon.

Instant On Ice

Sometimes it's too hot for a warm drink. Enter, the instant iced coffee. Mix a shot of boiling water with a teaspoon of granules to melt them, then pour over a cup full of ice cubes. Top with milk and stir well. Pretend you're at Starbucks and top with a squirt of canned whipped cream, if you like.


Mixing herbs with your homemade coffee creates some surprising results! A sprinkle of cinnamon sugar makes a Chai-esque, soothing drink -- while fresh mint is the answer to a peppermint hit (or mint choc chip if you add it to the Milo Mocha). Vanilla essence is also tasty.
