MTV Australia has apologised after a tweet ridiculing Latino actresses Eva Longoria and America Ferrera at the Golden Globes copped criticism.
As the actresses used their presenting spot at the awards ceremony to call out Hollywood racism, the Australian arm of the global broadcaster tweeted 'Where are the English subtitles?', much to the shock of other Twitter users.
The tweet immediately copped criticism for its racist undertones and an apology followed, saying they were riffing off the actresses' statements about cultural insensitivity.
As they introduced themselves, Longoria said: "I'm Eva Longoria, not Eva Mendes," and Ferrera continued: "And hi, I'm America Ferrera not Gina Rodriguez".
An MTV Australia spokeswoman told The Huffington Post Australia it was a "poor joke".
"MTV’s tweet was in reference to the joke made my by Eva Longoria and America Ferrera at the Golden Globes," the spokeswoman said.
"We realise it was poor joke and have taken the post down.
"We apologise for causing any offence and have decided to leave the humour to Ricky Gervais.”
