A man has been charged after a late-night bomb hoax shut down the Brisbane riverside suburb of Kangaroo Point.

Police said a "suspicious" item was discovered in a toilet block at Captain Burke Park around 8.30pm and an emergency situtation was declared, shutting down multiple nearby streets.

Nine News reported a man ran into Brisbane Jazz Club yelling there was a bomb in a nearby toilet block below the Story Bridge.

The emergency declaration was revoked at 12.35am after a specialist team declared the bomb to be a hoax.

A 28-year-old man from Deception Bay was charged with bomb hoax -- place article/substance and bomb hoax -- falsely state/inform bomb present. He was expected to appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court later today.

A second man was released without charge.
