An Australian anti-marriage equality group is sharing an offensive meme involving a rainbow-coloured noose that incorrectly links gay marriage and suicide.

Marriage Alliance last night put the image on Facebook and Twitter with a message saying the hashtag #marriageequality: "empowers political correctness".

"Unpopular opinions about marriage and gay rights will threaten the job security of employees," the post said.

"Same Sex Marriage is not worth the damage."

The meme has copped criticism for its insensitive approach to suicide and providing no factual link between suicide and marriage equality.

Mental health advocacy group beyond blue condemned the meme on Twitter, describing it as a "harmful message".

Marriage Alliance describes itself as "a grassroots movement that educates and empowers Australians to understand the effects of same sex marriage on our rights and freedoms".
