Queensland has recorded its first case of Zika virus for 2016 as the hideous disease sweeps the globe.

The Courier-Mail can reveal a woman returned to the state from El Salvador in December while carrying the infection.

It is believed she fell ill soon after arriving home and tested positive early this year for the virus in blood tests.
