When people tell Dubbo Mayor Mathew Dickerson his YouTube song is silly, he takes it in the nicest possible way.

After all, it's mostly his grown up children dissing him and the song 'No Dubbington' is doing what he intended -- getting the word out about NSW council amalgamation.

Dickerson set out to make a terrible song to draw attention to the fact that Dubbo residents only had a few days to make a submission opposing an amalgamation with neighbouring council Wellington.

While en route to the official opening of the Dubbo Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade, Dickerson told The Huffington Post Australia his kids were his hardest critics.

"My older children keep telling me to take it down off YouTube," Dickerson told HuffPost Australia with a laugh.

"They're telling my youngest daughter Julia to get me to get rid of the song -- but she's not embarrassed."

The unlikely hit has amassed more than 5,500 views in three days -- not bad for a song Dickerson took a few minutes to write.

By popular demand, here is the no-expense spared film clip to the song No Dubbington. http://ow.ly/YR3Se #NoDubbington

"I came up with the silly name Dubbington to convey the idea of amalgamation was silly. Then a colleague of mine asked whether I based it on the children's sown Chuggington.

"I've never heard of Chuggington but as soon as she played me the theme song, I knew I had to write some amalgamation-themed words to it."

That night, magic was made.

"I don't mind embarrassing myself with a silly ridiculous song if it reminds people amalgamation is a ridiculous idea as well."
