A few years back, the world went nuts over the option to change their Facebook profile picture to a rainbow flag in support of marriage equality. While it went global, that was an initiative out of the U.S. Now, it's Australia's turn.
Australian Marriage Equality is using Facebook's custom frames feature to provide a fun and easy way of changing your profile photo.
To change your profile, follow these steps:
- Visit the Australian Marriage Equality Facebook page and find the post pinned at the top of the Page that includes the invitation to apply the frame to your profile picture. Depending on the device you are using, this may appear as 'Try It' or 'use Frame' and you will then be prompted to select a profile picture and how long you would like the frame on your picture.
- If you see a story in News Feed that one of your friends have changed their picture, you can click on it and follow the prompt to 'Decorate Your Profile Picture'.
- If you want to add the frame to the profile picture of a Page, make sure that you have chosen to 'Use Facebook As Your Page' and find either the Australian Marriage Equality post or your friends’ post to go through the flow to apply it.
Not surprisingly the initiative has received a lot of support from the public. Custom frames have been available before, from Cricket Australia and Make-A-Wish-Foundation, among others.
In Australia, the same-sex marriage debate was the eleventh most talked about conversation on Facebook last year.
By the end of 2015, the number of people coming out on Facebook each day was double what it was just a few months prior to Mardi Gras 2015.
More Australians are also showing their interests in LGBTIQ related issues through their interactions with LGBTIQ Facebook Pages. The number of Australians who like prominent LGBTIQ pages grew over 20 percent in 2015.
