Rock And Theatre Legend Jon English Has Died, Aged 66

Australian singer, actor and performer Jon English has died, aged 66.

The British-born performer and All Together Now star was surrounded by his four children and close family when he diedagent Sea Sound Publicity said in a statement..

He was preparing for a national tour this year but pulled out of a live performance just three days ago due to health concerns.

"We were all with Jon last night," his brother, Jeremy English, told the ABC.

"All his family. At the hospital in Newcastle. And so, yes, we did get a chance to say goodbye, although he was not really conscious for a lot of the time."

He said his brother's musical talent came to the fore at a young age, when their father taught him how to play guitar.

He embraced music from then began playing in pubs when he was under age.

"As you weren't allowed to do, but nobody stopped you," his brother said.

"He was always showed a lot of promise as a musician."

English carved out a successful career both on television and on the stage, starring in the big hit Jesus Christ Superstar.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford told 3AW on Thursday that while English may not have been the name on everyone's lips over the past 20 years, he never stopped working.

"He never gave up on his dreams and ideas and they're the people in show business I really admire," he said.

This week, his management said: "On the advice of his doctors, Jon has had to pull out of his headline performance... Apologies to all of his fans who were looking forward to the day, but assures everyone he will be back to full health and rocking out on stage with you all again very soon".

English was best known for his song Six Ribbons, which went number one in more than six countries. He also won two Logies and starred in musicals Jesus Christ Superstar, Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado.
