Lismore High School may remain closed for a second day as a man continues to hold police at bay in a nearby home on the New South Wales north coast.

Nine homes were evacuated and the high school closed on Wednesday afternoon after police were called to a Dalley Street home in East Lismore over concerns of a man's welfare.

Joyce Stuckey who had to evacuate her home told The Northern Star she heard two gunshots coming from the house.

Police from Richmond Local Area Command arrived at the home at about 4:30pm and began negotiations with the man who made multiple threats.

New South Wales Police believe the man is the only person in the home.

Nearby streets and avenues remained closed off as the stand-off continues after 24 hours.

On Thursday afternoon The Rivers Secondary College Lismore High Campus Principal Chris Williams told students and parents on the school's Facebook page the school would continue to wait until police confirm the siege is over.

Students may spend a second day at home if the stand-off doesn't end overnight.

While the siege continued on Thursday afternoon in New South Wales, a Victorian school went into lockdown after reports of a gunman walking the school grounds.

Victoria Police confirmed no gun was found and the grounds were cleared at about 4pm on Thursday after receiving the reports at about 2:30pm.

Relieved parents picked up their children at Beveridge Primary School.
