Vivid Sydney has announced its 2016 program and it is very, very good.
Already slated to be the longest Vivid to date, the 23-day-festival looks to be jam-packed with talent, from musical acts like Bon Iver and New Order, to featured guests such as acclaimed director Spike Jonze, 'Orange Is The New Black' creator Jenji Kohan, 'House of Cards' show runner Beau Willimon and Australia's very own creative entrepreneur Margaret Zhang.
And that's not even getting started on the 80+ light installations and projections set to light up the city from Chatswood to Martin Place.
Announced on Thursday morning, Destination NSW CEO and the executive producer of Vivid Sydney, Sandra Chipchase, said Vivid Sydney 2016 was anticipated to be the biggest ever.
"This year Vivid Sydney is back with an incredible program where art, creativity and innovation meet, and are celebrated by local and international visitors," Chipchase said.
“Vivid Sydney delivers the world’s leading light artists in Vivid Light, cutting-edge musicians in Vivid Music, and creative innovators in Vivid Ideas. In 2015 the festival attracted a record 1.7 million attendees, and this year visitors to Vivid Sydney will have longer to experience the wonder of Vivid Sydney, and enjoy our biggest year yet.”
As part of Vivid LIVE, both New Order and Bon Iver will perform at the Sydney Opera House, along with jazz artist Esperenza Spalding.
Even if you don't head to one of these gigs, the Opera House itself will be well worth checking out. In a Vivid first, the Sydney icon will celebrate the work of Australian indigenous artists through the projection 'Songlines'.
Meanwhile, Vivid Ideas boasts a line-up aptly titled 'Game Changers Talk Series' which will feature Jonze, Kohan, Willimon and Zhang, each scheduled to share how they participated in shaping the modern creative landscape as we know it.
Carriageworks will also unveil a new virtual reality project 'Björk Digital', which, knowing Björk, is bound to be worth checking out. Oh, and did we mention it's also a world premiere?
Not bad, Vivid. Not bad at all.
Vivid Sydney, now in its eighth year, is the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas and is owned, managed and produced by Destination NSW.
Vivid Sydney runs from Friday 27 May to Saturday 18 June 2016. For more information, or to check out the program in full, head to the Vivid Sydney website.
