Easter is upon us and it’s time to stuff our faces with not just chocolate, but all the sweet, spiced, fluffy hot cross buns we can get our hands on.

You might like them plain, toasted with melted butter on top, made on a brioche base or filled with citrus peel. Or maybe you prefer the chocolate variety (who can blame you) over the traditional sultana-studded bun. But, chances are, you haven’t tried them with these scrumptious trimmings.

Hot cross buns with peanut butter and jam

PB and J, it’s a classic combination and, as it happens, it tastes particularly splendid on a hot cross bun base. The bun's cinnamon and mixed spices brings out the nutty peanut butter, while the sweet jam complements the rich flavours. Seriously, try it.

You will need:

  • Hot cross buns (try traditional or chocolate chip)
  • Peanut butter
  • Strawberry jam
  • Toaster

METHOD

  1. Slice hot cross buns in half and toast.
  2. Spread peanut butter on top, followed by a dollop of jam.

Hot cross buns with a Cadbury Creme Egg surprise

METHOD

  1. Preheat sandwich press. Slice hot cross buns in half and spread butter around the outside.
  2. Place the bottom half of the buns on the sandwich press, and place one egg in the center of each bun. Gently place the top of the hot cross buns on top and close the sandwich press lid.
  3. Toast until the top of the bun is golden brown and serve immediately.

You will need:

  • Hot cross buns
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Maple syrup
  • Sandwich press

METHOD

  1. Preheat sandwich press.
  2. Mix butter with a few pinches of cinnamon, and spread the cinnamon butter around the outside of the hot cross buns.
  3. Toast in the sandwich press until golden brown. Transfer to a plate and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drizzle of maple syrup.
