A pilot is dead after his helicopter crashed in Mackay and set a cane field alight.

A Queensland Police spokesman told The Huffington Post Australia the helicopter crashed into a paddock near the community of Carmila, on the central coast of Queensland, on Friday morning after it clipped overhead power lines.

"Both the helicopter and the field set alight," the spokesman said.

"At this stage it's presumed the pilot is deceased."

The man was later confirmed to have died.

The spokesman said the fire was under control and the forensic crash unit was on its way to the crash site.

Investigator are looking into the circumstances around the crash.
