The body of a missing 15-month-old girl who went missing in a north Melbourne park on Saturday has been found in a creek, police say.

Police said in a statement that the toddler's body was discovered by four people in Darebin Creek at about 2.45am on Sunday.

The little girl went missing from Olympic Park in Heidelberg West on Saturday morning.

"The body has not been formally identified, but investigators believe it to be the missing child from Heidelberg West," police said.

The park has reportedly been cordoned off as a crime scene and homicide squad detectives are on the scene.

A full-scale search for the toddler kicked off on Saturday after she was reported missing from the park at about 10am.

The mother of the toddler is said to have told police that a man snatched her child from her pram and ran away.

Police are said to believe the body is that of Sanaya Shaib.

Her mother, Sofina Nikat, reportedly ran to her home sobbing and hysterical after her child was abducted.

Police told reporters in Melbourne that they were looking for a man of African appearance in relation to the abduction.

It is believed the child was taken randomly.

"This is obviously...concerning for Victoria Police if this is a random abduction. We need to be careful, alert, given what has taken place," police said.
