A man has died after being gored by buffalo at a South Australian abattoir.

The 72-year-old man was mauled at Strathalbyn, about 60 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, on Thursday night while while unloading the buffalo from a truck, SA Police said in a statement.

Ambulance officers treated the man at the scene. He was flown to Flinders Medical Centre but died a short time later.

Safework SA is investigating the matter.

Buffalos have been transported from northern Australia to SA abattoirs for slaughter for decades, having been mustered from vast cattle properties in the Northern Territory, Queensland and northern WA, the Adelaide Advertiser reports.

Most have had no contact with humans before being caught.
