The Premier of New South Wales, Mike Baird, is the subject of a new mural that popped up in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Chippendale on Sunday afternoon.

The mural on Chippen Lane depicts the Premier holding a glass of red wine in one hand and a kebab in the other -- two of the things Sydneysiders are prevented from doing past certain hours due to the state government's lockout laws and the new ‘kebab lockouts’ implemented by the City of Sydney.

The mural appears a week after Baird returned from a trip to Israel, where he shared a Facebook post saying that “if Bethlehem were ever to become famous for a second thing” it would be the chicken kebab he had, which was the "culinary highlight" of the trip.

The City of Sydney has recently added further fuel to the lockout laws fire by preventing some of Sydneysiders favourite late night kebab shops trading past their approved hours on King Street, Newtown.

Istanbul on King, once the go-to place for greasy food after a night out, is one of the shops now required to close at midnight under its 50-year-old development application (DA). However, for more than a decade, owner Yasar Er traded until 4am on weekends with little attention from authorities, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Er was warned in 2015 at least twice about breaching his DA and had an application to extend his trading hours rejected because it lacked consent from his landlord. Since November, he has had to close his popular shop at midnight, to the disappointment of many.
