When it comes to kids movies, there are two main categories.
The lovable classics (think 'The Lion King', 'Aladdin' and the original 'Toy Story') and the ones you wish you could go back in time in order to unsee ('The Cat in the Hat' and 'Son of the Mask' are two such examples).
Given the price of movies these days (all together now: *shake angry fists at sky*), it's understandable some parents don't want to be caught in the position where they've forked out for some animated atrocity both adult and child would have been better off not seeing in the first place.
So here's a handful of upcoming kids' flicks that look to be at least halfway decent, if not downright awesome.
The Angry Birds Movie
Okay, okay. So when 'The Angry Birds Movie' was first announced, this reporter had serious doubts. Based on the widely popular smartphone game where birds knock out pigs, it didn't really scream 'amazing plot' or 'rich, robust characters'.
BUT, going off the trailer, it actually looks like a pretty slick production and, in terms of plot, endeavours to explain exactly why the 'angry birds' became so angry in the first place.
And that's not even mentioning the killer cast including the likes of Jason Sudeikis, Peter Dinklage, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader and Sean Penn.

Alice Through The Looking Glass
Those who were a fan of Tim Burton's 2010 film 'Alice in Wonderland' (given the film took over a billion dollars worldwide, we can assume there were at least a few) will no doubt be looking forward to this long-awaited sequel.
This adventure will see Alice not only returning to Underland but travelling back in time to save the Mad Hatter, who is getting madder by the minute.
Though James Bobin will take the director's reins from Burton, many of the original cast members will return, including Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, as well as Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham, the late Alan Rickman (sob), Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall. Funnymen Sacha Baron Cohen and Rhys Ifans have also joined the lineup.
If anything, this movie will be worth seeing just to squeeze in some more new Alan Rickman material while we can.

Finding Dory
Yesss! Ellen DeGeneres is back as Dory, everyone's favourite forgettable fish.
This time, she's on a mission to find her family, along with helpers Marlin, Nemo, Crush the Turtle and more.
After the worldwide success of 'Finding Nemo,' we can only hope Pixar doesn't mess this one up. Then again, knowing them, they won't.

The BFG
Did anyone else's heart skip a beat when they saw the trailer for this?
It looks as though Steven Spielberg has managed to breathe plenty of magic into this film adaptation of Roald Dahl's book of the same name, and will no doubt delight children and adults around the world.
Newcomer Ruby Barnhill plays Sophie, a 10-year-old orphan who befriends a friendly giant named the BFG (Mark Rylance) and helps him on his mission to take on the evil giants who like to gobble up boys and girls.
Other notable cast members include Penelope Wilton, Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader, Rafe Spall and Jemaine Clement.
Bring it on.
