Sydneysiders have woken up to a thick blanket of smoke covering the large parts of the harbour city.

The eerie effect is the result of large scale controlled burning carried out by the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) in the Blue Mountains.

The smoke is especially thick on the harbour and is blanketing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

NSW RFS expects the smoke to clear on Saturday.

"The smoke haze over Sydney this morning is from hazard reduction burning -- important work for bush fire season," NSW RFS said.

NSW RFS advises those with health conditions like asthma to "take your normal precautions" given the heavy haze.

Tips on staying healthy in smokey bushfire conditions can be found here.

They include staying indoors, closing all windows and doors and blocking air vents, and -- if you have an air conditioner-- setting it to recycle.

Despite the haze, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a sunny day for the city with a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.
