Captain America is now basically a Nazi and everyone is freaking out.
Marvel Comics unveiled the shocking twist on Wednesday in the pages of Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, in which Cap utters the phrase "Hail Hydra."
Hydra, for the uninitiated, is an evil organisation hell bent on world domination, and is usually led by Adolf Hitler's personal, fictional super spy, The Red Skull.
No one -- I repeat no one -- is happy about this plot twist, and it's sparked a hastag #SayNoToHYDRACap.
Marvel Editor Tom Brevoort told Time magazine the plot twist has been in the works since late 2014, and deliberately takes a political edge.
In the comic the Red Skull reportedly talks about "criminal trespassers" who "make a mockery" of America's borders, while calling refugees in Germany an "invading army" bringing "fanatical beliefs and crime" to Europe.
Nothing new for Hydra, sure, but as Time points out its similar to rhetoric heard during the current U.S. election.
"We try to write comics in 2016 that are about the world and the zeitgeist of 2016, particularly in Captain America," Brevoort said.
"Nick Spencer, the writer, is very politically active. He's a Capitol Hill head and following this election very closely. So we can talk about political issues in a metaphoric way.
"That's what gives our stories weight and meat to them. Any parallels you have seen to situations real or imagined, living or dead, is probably intentional but metaphorically not literally."
Comic writer Nick Spencer has copped a fair bit of grief for the strange turn of events.
As for whether the plot twist is temporary or not (we bet it is) remains to be seen.
