The Labor Party has announced its big plan to get 500 extra hours of women's sport on free-to-air TV, but getting as much attention as the $21 million for the ABC is Bill Shorten's boo-boo in naming Australia's national sporting captains.

At a press conference following the announcement, which would see Australia's premier female sporting teams given a big boost in coverage on the ABC, Shorten said "women athletes deserve comparable coverage to our male athletes", citing the recent successes of the Southern Stars cricketers, the Matildas soccer team, the Diamonds netballers and the Opals basketball squad.

But Shorten was caught out by the very first question from the media, when a journalist asked him about the captains of those teams.

"I've got a pop quiz for you this morning. Can you name the captain of the Hockeyroos, the Diamonds and the Southern Stars?" a journalist asked.

Shorten has been copping some criticism for saying he champions women's sport but failed to supply some facts; but with that in mind, and in the interests of "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones," a pop quiz for you all: How much do you know about women's sport?

For the record, Shorten got Laura Geitz correct, and also the surname of the Southern Stars captain; however, the cricket team's captain is Meg, not Amanda, and he couldn't name the Hockeyroos captain.
