A man has been charged over offensive language used on Nova Peris' Facebook page.

A 64-year-old man has been charged by police after allegedly making racist comments on the Facebook page of outgoing senator Nova Peris.

Peris, who announced last week she would not recontest her Northern Territory seat in the Senate, posted a screenshot of the alleged abuse on her Twitter page on Saturday.

"Nova F*** off. You were only endorsed by Juliar because you were a black c***," the comment read.

"Go back to the bush and suck on witchity grubs and yams. Stop painting your f***ing face with white s*** in parliament. Other than being a runner you are nothing."

The man who owned the account, a 64-year-old from Woy Woy in NSW, denied that he was behind the comments, claiming his Facebook account was hacked.

"I found out about this about 5.30 on Saturday afternoon when Facebook sent me a notification that someone had spammed my account. I did have an Instagram account, and that vile message had gone out on that account as well," he told News Corp.

"I was clearly hacked. I'm the victim of a really horrible and extremely vicious hacking."

However, around 4.45pm on Monday, NSW Police confirmed they had charged a 64-year-old man over the incident.

"Police have charged a man over alleged offensive social media posts. Detectives from Brisbane Water Local Area Command were made aware of the posts, directed at a 45-year-old woman, and commenced an investigation," police said in a statement.

"About 1pm today (Monday 30 May 2016), police attended a business on Victoria Road, Woy Woy, and arrested a 64-year-old man. The man was taken to Gosford Police Station where he was charged with use carriage service (telecommunications) to cause offence. He was granted conditional bail to appear at Gosford Local Court on Tuesday 21 June 2016."
