Nearly 600 Australians have received awards in this year's Queen's Birthday honours.

The 565 recipients include Aussies from all walks of life such as indigenous leaders, sporting stars, law enforcers and even a pop star.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione received the coveted Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia, while indigenous leader Warren Mundine was awarded as an Officer of the Order of Australia.

Singer Kate Ceberano, who has released 24 albums across her illustrious career, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her services to music and charities.

Other well-known Australians to receive awards include philanthropist Ros Packer, Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens and John Bertrand, who is best-known as 1983 America's Cup-winning yacht Australia II skipper.

Governor-General Peter Cosgrove said this year's list recognised a diverse range of contributions to Australian life.

"We are fortunate as a community to have so many outstanding people willing to dedicate themselves to the betterment of our nation and it is only fitting that they have today been recognised through the Australian Honours system," he said.

"Today's recipients now join the company of more than 40,000 women and men whose actions have enriched our community and our lives. Their qualities -- compassion, dedication, generosity, selflessness, tolerance, and energetic ambition -- inspire and motivate us.

"For over 40 years, these honours have helped to define, encourage and reinforce our national aspirations and ideals by acknowledging exceptional Australians. Today, we add a new group of names to those we should all admire."

The Australian list comes a day after honours were unveiled in the UK, with veteran rocker Rod Stewart among those who received awards.
