Australia Wins Tri-Nations Series In West Indies

We're still the best one-day cricket nation in the world.

Australia has won the Tri-Nation One Day Series against the West Indies and South Africa in the Caribbean after beating the West Indies by 58 runs in the final in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Australia made 9/270 in its innings with a host of medium-sized contributions from the batsmen led by wicket keeper Matthew Wade's 57 not out. Mitchell Marsh struck early with the ball for the tourists with a brace of three early wickets. He finished with an economical 3 for 13 off eight overs, and the West Indies run chase fell short from there despite some spirited resistance from the middle order.

Australia retains the number one world ranking which it has held since the 2015 World Cup, which it won. It's a great result considering we could have made an early tournament exit before calmly chasing down a big West Indies total in the match before the final. South Africa was the team that missed out.

What else happened in weekend sport? This.

This sublime "bicycle kick" goal from Xherdan Shaqiri, who plays for Stoke in the English Premier League, was the undoubted sporting highlight of the weekend. It got Switzerland back level against Poland in the Euro 2016 knockout phase, though the Swiss later lost the match to Poland on penalties.

In other Euro 2016 news, France came back from a goal down to eliminate the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in Lyon overnight, Germany beat Slovakia 3-0, while this piece of brilliance from Belgian superstar Eden Hazard helped Belgium beat Hungary 4-0.

Rugby union happened on the weekend, but we're not really talking about that because England beat Australia 44-40 to win the tree Test series 3-0. Sigh. Here's a wrap if you really must read more.

Guess who's top of the AFL ladder? Just a little team you might have heard of called Hawthorn, who've won the last three flags and who, incredibly, are making a really good push towards a fourth despite injuries to key players and the unavailability of forward spearhead Jarryd Roughead, who is having treatment for skin cancer.

The Sydney Swans may yet take top spot if they beat the Bulldogs next week in the second half of the split round. But the really big story of the weekend's games was St Kilda's narrow win over Geelong. The Cats blew a chance to go top in their unexpected three point loss. Highlights below.

And the second best thing we saw this weekend? It was this moment in the Dragons/Knights NRL match, which the Dragons won 30-18. Benji Marshall was back to his mercurial best for the Dragons, and it's well worth watching the extended highlights here. But this Nathan Ross finish. Wow.
