5 Movies To Catch At The Cinema This Winter

Unless you're planning to hit the slopes at Thredbo or Perisher this winter (or take leave of Australia all together and head off overseas, you lucky bugger), chances are you're going to be spending plenty of time indoors.

And who could blame you? Temperatures are lower than usual at this time of year and don't look to be easing up any time soon.

Luckily for movie buffs, there's a string of pretty promising titles being released over the winter months, many of which are begging to be seen on the big screen.

Better yet, the only 'cold' thing you'll have to deal with is your Choc Top.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

Release Date: July 7

The premise is simple. Mike and Dave Spangle (Adam Devine and Zac Efron) are hard-partying brothers renowned for wreaking havoc at family events. In order for this not to happen at their sister's Hawaii wedding, Spangle Snr. insists the boys bring respectable dates.

In the absence of knowing anyone 'respectable', Mike and Dave place an ad online which ends up attracting the attention of Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick), two equally (if not more so) hard-partying girls who, keen for a free trip to Hawaii, dupe the brothers into choosing them.

Why see it?

From the trailer, it's not hard to see what kind of movie this is going to be, and will no doubt attract fans of 'Neighbours' and 'The Hangover' trilogy. This time, however, the girls are running the show, and we've got a feeling it will be worth the ticket price for Plaza and Kendrick alone.

Ghostbusters

Release date: July 14.

Thirty years after the beloved original franchise burst onto our screens, a new team is ready to answer the 'Ghostbusters' call.

Why see it?

Um, hello, why not? Not only is 'Ghostbusters' one of the most iconic franchises of our time, but Paul Feig's highly anticipated reboot stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones (aka some of the funniest women working in Hollywood) as well as our very own Chris Hemsworth.

Plus it's family friendly, so will make for perfect school holiday fare.

Jason Bourne

Release date: July 28.

The next chapter of Universal Pictures' Bourne franchise sees Matt Damon reprise the role of the CIA's most lethal former operative for the first time in nine years.

Both Damon and director Paul Greengrass have been coy about what the CIA wants with Bourne this time, though Damon notes we'll find him in a "dark and unresolved" place and describes the film as "the completion of this journey that started in 'The Bourne Identity'." Hmmm.

Why see it?

Because Damon is back as Bourne! (No offence, Jeremy Renner, but we'd all prefer to pretend 'The Bourne Legacy' never happened).

Plus Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander have joined the cast, so who knows what they'll have in store.

Suicide Squad

Release date: August 4.

Intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles a team of the most dangerous supervillains on earth for a covert mission.

Written and directed by David Ayer, the ensemble cast includes Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne.

Why see it?

Not only does 'Suicide Squad' look spectacularly fun, with heaps of cool costumes, big explosions and wacky characters, we haven't been this psyched about casting in ages. Jared Leto as The Joker? Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn? Yes, please.

War Dogs

Release date: August 18.

"How did two twenty-something young men land a $300 million Pentagon contract?"

Good question. And the answer is based on a true story.

'War Dogs' follows young arms dealers Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) and David Packouz (Miles Teller) who make their (considerable) fortune by supplying weapons for U.S. allies in Afghanistan.

Why see it?

Not only are Teller and Hill great performers in their own right, if the trailer is anything to go by, their onscreen camaraderie is on point.

The 'true story' factor also adds extra interest, not to mention the fact that it will be nice to see something brand-spanking new among the reboots, franchises and action superhero stuff.

Oh, and it's directed by Todd Phillips of 'Road Trip', 'Old School', and 'The Hangover' trilogy, so we're guessing it's going to be a pretty fun ride.
