Territorians have again celebrated cracker night.

The Northern Territory's 2016 cracker night didn't disappoint last night, with thousands taking part in the loud, colourful and... dangerous event.

Blazes broke out across Darwin due to errant crackers and firefighters were called out a whopping 280 times to extinguish grass fires, according to the ABC.

The noise was so great that one English tourist said it was like being in war-torn Syria.

"I felt like we were in Syria driving down the street, the whole car was shaking," Ben Winston from England told the ABC.

The event is cherished by many in the NT, but Darwin Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim has called on Territorians to "grow up and show responsibility" and scrap the night.

One of the biggest pyrotechnic displays was at Darwin's Mindi Beach.

The NT is the only place in the country where it's legal to let off fireworks for one night a year.

In 2015, over 20 people ended up with cracker-related injuries.
