Today Extra host Sonia Kruger says it is her democratic right as a mother to discuss immigration and religion "without automatically being labelled racist".

On Monday afternoon Kruger defended her comments on the Today Show where she said Muslims should be banned from entering Australia following the terrorist attack in Nice, along with a number of attacks in Europe.

Kruger didn't back down to the outrage on social media posting this photo on Twitter:

On Monday morning Kruger sparked online fury -- which left her name trending on Twitter and more than 2000 comments on the broadcaster's Facebook page -- by linking the number of Muslims entering a country to the number of terrorist attacks occurring.

Kruger was discussing a column penned by Andrew Bolt on the Today Show's Mixed Grill segment with host Lisa Wilkinson -- who is also The Huffington Post Australia's editor-at-large -- and David Campbell.

"I think Andrew Bolt has a point, there is a correlation between the number of people who are Muslim in a country and the number of terrorist attacks," Kruger said.

"I would venture that if you spoke to the parents of those children killed in Nice then they would be of the same opinion."

When Wilkinson asked Kruger whether her comment was airing the view of Donald Trump, Kruger said "perhaps it is" while also reiterating her stance.

Channel Nine has also come to Kruger's defence since the comments aired, releasing a statement on Monday afternoon.

"Nine's view is that we believe in freedom of speech and the Mixed Grill segment on the Today Show is a place where that happens. Sonia, David and Lisa each expressed a variety of opinions on the show this morning," the statement read.
