It's alleged that at about 7pm Thursday the man drove a car down the driveway and into the roller door of the Merrylands Police Station.
The man had at least one open gas cylinder inside the car at the time and used an accelerant to set himself alight inside the vehicle, according to media reports.
The driver suffered serious burns and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remains under police guard in a stable condition, police said.
On Saturday morning, police said they charged the man with destroying or damaging property with intention of endangering life.
