A note discovered by a cleaner on a Qantas plane triggered a bomb scare in Queenstown on Sunday.

A threatening message was found written on a note, indicating that a bomb was on the plane after it had landed in New Zealand's South Island from Sydney, Fairfax Media reports.

Emergency services immediately evacuated the airport after the cleaner alerted authorities about 3pm local time.

New Zealand Police conducted a thorough search of the airport and found nothing suspect. The terminals were re-opened later on Sunday.

"Nothing of interest has been found and the airport is now being reopened and will resume normal operations," a statement from New Zealand Police read.

Police ask people to be patient as there will be delays as people are moved back into the terminal. Police are continuing to investigate this incident."
