A man caught using his mobile phone while behind the wheel has led to a massive seizure of almost $45 million worth of the drug known as "ice" in Sydney.
The huge haul was sparked when Redfern police stopped a 26-year-old man in Thomas Street, Haymarket, on Friday after he was spotted using his mobile phone while driving.
Police say they found in the car 3kg of methamphetamine, commonly referred to as "ice", with an estimated street value of $1.2 million.
That bust led investigators to stop a 30-year-old man carrying a suitcase at St Johns Park in western Sydney on Saturday afternoon. Police searched the man, allegedly seizing 10kg of ice.
Then last night, police executed a search warrant at a residence in St Johns Park, seizing $1.4 million cash and arresting a 21-year-old man.
That led to another search being executed in Marrickville where police allegedly seized almost about 77kg of ice.
The 3 men nabbed by police have been charged with drug offences, according to the ABC.
Police told reporters on Sunday that those charged were involved with organised crime.
"It appears that the three people involved, police will allege a drug network, an organised crime drug network," the ABC quotes Superintendent Danny Doherty as saying.
Supt Doherty reportedly said the raids would have a big effect on how much ice was available in some areas on Sydney.
