A Queensland police media conference was interrupted on Wednesday by the discovery of an 80-year-old woman's body on Wright Street in the suburb of Wulguru, south of Townsville.
The press conference was due to begin on Wednesday morning in relation to the stabbing of a 26-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man on the same street on Tuesday night when Detective Inspector Kelly Harvey was alerted to the body by a local resident.
"She's dead... My neighbour," the man said.
Crime scenes have been set up in both locations and a homicide investigation has begun following the discovery, according to a statement released by Townsville police.
A 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene overnight and charged in relation to the stabbings.
The man remains under police custody in hospital, according to the ABC, with offences include breaking and entering, wilful damage and assault upon police officers.
Harvey said police were called to the scene on Tuesday night and found the man naked roaming the street armed with a knife and a fence paling. A police officer was kicked in the chest and before a taser was used during the arrest.
Both stabbing victims remain in a stable condition at Townsville Hospital. It is not yet known whether the two incidents are connected.
