An active shooter remains on the loose after allegedly shooting a woman dead and injuring four others in an overnight shooting in downtown Austin, Texas.

Austin police are "actively searching" for the man, who police say is a light-skinned black or Hispanic male believed to be in his 20s.

Police believe that a second incident which occurred nearby shortly afterwards is unrelated.

Austin Police confirmed the initial shooting at around 3am on Sunday morning EST.

A police spokesperson said that their initial investigations suggest that the first shooting incident began with a "disturbance" between individuals, before the suspect allegedly started shooting into the crowd

A woman in her 30s was reported dead at the scene. Three other women, all believed to be in their 30s, were taken to the University Medical Centre Brackenridge for treatment for what the Austin-Travis County EMS described as "serious but not life-threatening" injuries. A fifth victim was treated at the scene but declined being taken to hospital.

In the second incident, a man believed to be in his 20s fired a gun at a parking garage before being restrained and disarmed by onlookers. No one is believed to have been injured in the incident except for the shooter, who was transported to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Police have confirmed that the first shooter remains on the loose and are encouraging any witnesses to come forward with descriptions, photos and videos taken at the scene of the shooting which may help to locate the suspect.

"We are very early on in the investigation," a police spokesperson said.

"At this point, we are not aware of any further incidents."

Residents are being told to avoid the downtown area.

The two shooting follow a spate of gun violence in America in recent weeks.

On 12 June, a man with ties to Islamic extremism shot dead 49 people at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida in the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history.
