Queensland is set to allow same-sex couples and singles to adopt children under proposed changes to state laws.

Communities Minister Shannon Fentiman said the Adoption Act 2009 would be overhauled after a recent review found support for the amendment, the ABC reports.

The proposed changes will reportedly be taken to Parliament this month.

Fentimen told the ABC it was time Queensland caught up with other states and territories on the issue.

"I am proud to say we will widen the eligibility criteria to allow those groups to adopt," she said.

Fentiman was the driving force behind the review that triggered the proposed legal amendment and six months of community consultation, according to Fairfax Media.

The Queensland government is said to need the support of either the LNP or the crossbench to ensure the proposal becomes law.
