The last time Boomer Phelps’ dad won a gold medal at the Olympics, the 3-month-old decided that it would be a great time to fall asleep. But he (adorably) deigned to be conscious for his father’s race the second time around.

Michael Phelps received his 19th Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, competing with the United States team in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. He won his 20th Tuesday night, besting the competition in the 200-meter butterfly despite being 31 years old. Quite a feat!

So when Michael received that medal, he headed over to his cheering family. His fiancée, Nicole Johnson, noticeably wasn’t sleeping. Neither was his mom, Deborah Phelps. And on Tuesday night, against all odds, Boomer was awake as well.

To recap, here’s the sleeping Boomer after the 19th gold.

The media really wanted to make sure they caught Boomer with his eyes open. Here, he already looks like he’s drifting.

For an even cuter photo of Boomer sleeping, here’s one from his personal Instagram.

Mommy told me sleep is good so I can grow up to be big and tall like daddy!

Phelps also won his 21st gold medal Tuesday night in Rio, swimming in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. He can’t be stopped. At publication time, it remains unclear whether Boomer stayed awake for this. Team USA was, though.
