Thousands Compete In City 2 Surf Under Ideal Conditions

A huge field has again taken part in the iconic race.

The first competitors have crossed the finish line in this year's City 2 Surf fun run as thousands more pound the pavement from the city's CBD to Bondi beach.

Sydney runner Harry Summers was the first man to cross the line in 42 minutes while Cassie Fien won the women's race. Paralympian Kurt Fearnley was the first wheelchair athlete to finish.

Thousands of people were up early in Sydney this morning to take part in the annual City 2 Surf fun run which kicked off under sunny skies.

This year's field has been estimated at about 80,000 runners, many of whom are still making their way to the finish line.

The popular road running race from Sydney's CBD to Bondi beach in the east is in its 44th edition this year and remains one of the biggest events on the harbour city's annual calendar.

Ideal conditions have greeted the race, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a clear day with a max temperature of 19 degrees Celsius.

Billed as the world's biggest fun run, the City 2 Surf has in 2016 reportedly already raised over $4 million for runners' chosen charities.

The 14km fun run starts in Hyde Park and winds its way east down William St before runners have to take on the notorious heartbreak hill.

The race is always a fun-filled mix of competitive runners, company and social groups, and a cast of colourful characters in dress-up.

Police said roads closed for the run should start reopening in the CBD, Kings Cross, Darlinghurst and Edgecliff about midday, while all other roads in the Eastern Suburbs will remain closed until 4pm.
