In 1962 Mejorada del Campo, Madrid, Justo Gallego began building a cathedral.
His intention was to do it by hand, with no formal design, no formal architectural training and to make it out of scraps and junk. A totally recycled structure made purely as a dedication to Virgin Mary and a show of his faith.
Today the cathedral stands at 131 feet tall, and the former Monk Gallego is in his 90s.
He's 53 years into his project and no where near finished.
"When I started to build this cathedral, the word on the street was that I was crazy," Gallego said.
"They didn't believe I would be so dedicated. And well, I'm proving them wrong."
He makes no money from this project and has very little resources. But it is his faith that drives him despite knowing he won't complete it within his lifetime.
"I hope that after I die, this cathedral... Well, I'm leaving it to the divine hand," Gallego said.
