The Newtown Fire Station has attracted its fair share of attention for their whacky signs that somehow manage to both comment on world events while sending out a fire safety message.

This week, it appears like the rest of us the station has caught some serious Olympic fever with a new sign being put up almost daily commenting on the what's going on in Rio 2016.

Justin Smith, from the Newtown Fire Station told The Huffington Post Australia that they were engaging in an 'Olympic pun-athon' which will continue right up until the end of the Rio Olympics.

Smith said the post that has resonated the most with the community so far was their dedication to Prince when he died in April that has been shared over 3,400 times.

"It's a team effort and we get our inspiration from what's going on in society and combine it with our fire safety message" he said.

Their popular signs have given them a more than substantial social media following with over 9,000 Facebook likes to their page.

"We try and reflect community values, being in Newtown we have such an eclectic and diverse society here."
