It’s been more than a year since a gunman opened fire in a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, killing two women and then himself during a screening of Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck.”
In this week’s edition of Lena Dunham and Jennifer Konner’s newsletter, Lenny Letter, Schumer opens up about a text pal Jennifer Lawrence sent the day she learned of the shooting that comforted her in the aftermath.
“[When the theater shooting happened,] it was such a shock, and it shouldn’t have been because it happens,” she told the “Girls” creator. “You know, that is actually when I felt the closest to Jennifer Lawrence, because that day she texted me, ‘It’s your fault.’ And in times like that only jokes make you feel a little better.”
Dunham then dubbed Lawrence’s text “the greatest worst thing I ever heard.”
Since the shooting, Schumer has taken it upon herself to advocate for stricter gun regulation using any avenue at her disposal. In August 2015, she stood beside her cousin, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in a press conference to introduce a three-part legislative gun control plan that she described as a common-sense approach to America’s gun epidemic.
