It was the case that captivated the world: American student is twice tried, twice convicted, and then subsequently acquitted for the murder of her British roommate -- and now, Amanda Knox will become the subject of a new Netflix Original documentary, set to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday.
Two duelling trailers were released on Friday, sending us back to 2007 when the body of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher was found with a deep cut to her throat in the flat she shared with Knox in the city of Perugia.
Keeping with the streaming service's genre of spotlighting flaws in the criminal justice system, the trailers send viewers on a three-minute journey of grappling with the truth.
"Believe Her" portrays Knox as the naive exchange student trapped in an endless nightmare as she becomes the target of intense media attention.
"Believe Her."
While "Suspect Her" questions her statements and behaviour throughout the trial, giving weight to the narrative she was a sex-crazed killer.
"Either I'm a psychopath in sheep's clothing or I am you," Knox is heard saying to camera.
"Suspect Her."
The Italian courts finally acquitted Knox in 2015 as the case lacked evidence to prove any wrongdoing. By this point Knox has spent almost four years in an Italian prison.
The documentary aims to go beyond guilt or innocence, Knox herself along with other key players including former co-defendant and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini and Daily Mail reporter Nick Pisa shedding light on the circumstances over the past nine years.
