When natural disaster or mass casualties occur around the world, the Australian Government-funded National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre (NCCTRC) deploy doctors, nurses and other responders from the Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) to help.
However, in such turbulent and unpredictable times the NCCTRC need to know the team they are sending are prepared and experienced. So amongst other education and training AUSMAT undertake, working with the Timor-Leste government, the NCCTRC deploy a team to the Tour de Timor each year to test the responders in hot, humid and tough conditions.
Emily Verdouw travelled to Timor-Leste with The National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre for the Tour de Timor 2016.
