Police are investigating after eight drug overdoses on the Gold Coast.

Eight people have been taken to hospital in a wave of drug overdoses on the Gold Coast.

Four men and a woman were rushed to hospital early on Saturday morning from one home at Surfers Paradise while three others on an end-of-season trip also had to be hospitalised, according to News Corp Australia.

It's reported that some of those affected turned psychotic and even leaped into a canal after taking the mystery drug. One of those under the influence had to be sedated.

All the people taken to hospital are said to be in their late teens or 20s.

A police spokesman told The Huffington Post Australia that the drug takers were suffering from symptoms that included hallucinations.

He said it was unclear whether the incidents were connected and that police inquiries were continuing to locate where the drugs came from.

"We're trying to locate the source of the drugs," he said.
