Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek is worried about what a Donald Trump will mean for Australia's security.

Tanya Plibersek has hit out at Donald Trump, saying the divisive Republican presidential candidate raises security concerns for Australia.

Speaking on Sunday, Plibersek said she was worried about the security implications of a Trump presidency given he had "pushed out the boat so far" in his tilt for the top job.

"We are really in extraordinary times ... he has broken so many conventions for us to say as Australians that we are deeply concerned about the security issues his candidacy has raised." the deputy opposition leader told Sky News.

Ms Plibersek also reportedly said she was not a fan of Mr Trump getting close to Russia.

Trump had continually shown himself to be an unsuitable choice for president, Plibersek added, noting that a future Labor government would base its relationship with the US on a "country to country" basis, not on personalities.

"Our relationships between the United States and Australia are deep and strong and go well beyond any two people," she's quoted as saying.

Plibersek also reiterated Labor's call for a free vote to decide the long-running marriage equality debate, calling on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to follow his conscience on the issue.
