Aussie Bloke Fights Off Shark With Broom

And it's REALLY terrifying.

Only in Australia would a video surface of a man fighting off a shark with a garden broom.

Dan Hoey, owner and operator of Salty Dog Charters, was on the water with some clients when a great white shark started to circle his charter boat.

Naturally, he decided to take matters into his own hands and fend off the almost 5.5 metre shark with an ordinary garden broom, all while keeping very cool about the whole thing.

In the video taken in Victoria's Port Fairy, the shark appears to angrily circle the boat before trying to take a bite of the motor.

"When it bit the motor, I wanted to push it away but didn't want to hurt it, I didn't know what to use. My brother passed me the broom and I thought, 'that'll do'," Hoey told 9 News.

While great white sharks are a protected and vulnerable species, there is no legislation against them being hit with a broom, only for being caught and removed from the water.

Hoey's wife Rachael said the pot full of bait under the boat is likely to have attracted the great white, The Age reports.

"It tried to take a chunk out of the motor, and it did actually leave some marks and scratches," she said.

According to Salty Dog Charters website, Hoey has been an angler for more than 30 years and evidently there couldn't have been a better man for the job.
