Inside the house police found the bodies of a 43-year-old woman, a 44-year-old man and two children, a boy and girl aged 10 and 11 respectively. A dog was also found. Police have not yet confirmed their relation to each other.

Neighbours have told Fairfax media the family are originally from Colombia, and had lived at the house for about 10 years.

Police have yet to notify next of kin and say the adult pair were foreign nationals.

"The mother is held in very high regard in this community," Superintendant Dave Darcy told reporters on Monday.

"Since coming to Australia they have made a significant contribution to how we live. They've done a fantastic job"

He said both children suffered from a significant disability.

Asked if police were treating the deaths as a murder-suicide, Supt. Darcy said police wanted to keep their options open.

"I have specifically spoken with the homicide investigators and our investigators and we have come to a unanimous view that it is far too early to make such a conclusion," he told reporters on Monday.

"There is no one telling us at the moment what has happened.

"There is no one who has witnessed it."
